In 2013, John Drake founded J Drake Web Design. Based out of Richmond, Virginia, Drake’s company is a full service digital branding studio that builds, designs, manages, and maintains websites that are mobile responsive. The magic happens from John’s home office and while it’s served him well for the past decade, the business owner recently decided he was due for an upgrade.
When John was looking to give his home office a face lift, he set out to find a shelving system to tie the space together. He had several different shelves with lots of books that he wanted to find a way to store that looked good and eliminated clutter.
John began looking into different options. He considered adding built-ins or several different types of shelving units. He ultimately landed on a modular shelving unit with aluminum shelves with a white finish.
“Adding the shelves was part of redesign of the space,” says John. “New paint and decluttering to open up the space a bit.”
Once the shelves arrived, John got to work installing them. Although he says the installation process was simple, he stressed that taking it slow was helpful to ensure he had all the holes in studs, especially since he’d be filling his shelves with heavy books.
“I like the openness of the shelves,” says John. “As a designer I prescribe to the ‘less is more" philosophy. I have a constantly rotating array of books, so keeping them in a central location is a great help.”
John is a fan of the clean and modern look of his shelves. He likes that they fit the aesthetic he was after while still being functional. So far, he’s received nothing but positive feedback from friends and family and thinks they are a great addition to his space.
“There are a lot of options available,” John says to anyone looking to upgrade their space. “Think about how you want the space to look, what items are going to be on the shelves, and what the purpose of the shelves is going to serve.”
