Kim Halliday on Creating a Calm, Stylish Space That Celebrates Music and Design

Kim Halliday is a self-proclaimed renaissance woman. She wears many hats and spends her time working as a graphic designer, interior designer, product photographer, and musician. Design, art, music, and beauty are extremely important to her, and she prioritizes creating a space that creates a sense of calm without sacrificing personality.

So, when Kim and her husband were in the market for a shelving system to house their ever-growing record collection, they took to the internet. After pouring over images online and navigating social media, they encountered Modern Shelving®. They liked that Modern Shelving® offered styles that complimented their mid-century modern aesthetic and that customization was an option.

“We had been searching for something functional, yet beautiful to house our ever-growing record collection,” says Kim. “It became increasingly clear that this particular niche market was exceptionally slim. So, when I discovered Modern Shelving®, I couldn’t believe how perfect it was going to be for us.”

The Hallidays opted for a combination of stock shelves with some customization. They chose stock shelves but with a custom heigh railing to accommodate their mid-century windows and exposed electrical conduit.

The couple spent some time chatting with the design team and after receiving samples, was able to land on a final decision. Everything shipped out quickly and once it arrived, Kim’s husband assembled and installed the shelves himself.

“Assembly was definitely a little challenging at first with lining up the brackets for the shelves since there are no pre-drilled holes,” says Kim. “But, nothing a little painters tape, determination, and elbow grease couldn’t solve.”

The Hallidays shelves are front and center in their living room and house their record collection. They love that the shelves are all aluminum with wood-look aluminum shelves so they don’t have to worry about the shelves buckling under the weight of their records.

“Music is such a huge part of our lives, and our records say a lot about who we are as people,” says Kim. “It’s only fair they get a spotlight in our home, and your shelves really make that possible. They’re not just a place to store them, they’re a central part of our home’s design now.”

Kim Halliday’s story is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can blend beauty and function, transforming everyday storage into a centerpiece that reflects personality and passion. Her record collection isn't just stored—it’s celebrated, seamlessly integrated into a space filled with creativity, intention, and charm.
