A Studio That Speaks Style: Christiane deJong Elevates Her Workspace with Modern Shelving ®

Architectural firm deJong Studio, based in the Washington D.C. metro area, enhanced its workspace with modular aluminum shelving from Modern Shelving® to stylishly and efficiently store fabric samples. Known for restoring mid-century modern homes, the studio chose the shelves for their sleek, functional design and affordability. The reconfigurable kits allowed flexibility when installation plans changed, and while the team appreciated the consult options, they desired easier direct communication and added features like end caps. Overall, the shelving system met their organizational needs and design standards, making it a valued addition to their compact, creative studio.

At deJong Studio they’re all about crafting sustainable modern homes and additions that help connect their clients to nature. Based in the Washington D.C. metro area, the boutique residential architectural practice specializes in the sensitive restoration of mid-century modern homes and creating designs that continue that legacy.

As a small studio, deJong Studio does a lot with a little, both in terms of their space and their team. Often during client meetings they’ll need to access a material sample, so they wanted a way to creatively store the samples out of the way while simultaneously being easy to access. And so, they began their search for a set of aluminum shelves.

“Aluminum shelving has long been on the radar of architects,” says studio owner Christiane deJong. “Most systems are finely machined and offer a kit of parts that can give you a lot of flexibility in configuration. They can be pricey but Modern Shelving offered us the look and functionality we wanted at a lower price point.”

After placing their order, DeJong Studio had a change of plans on where they intended to install the shelves. Luckily, they were able to reconfigure the kits of parts they had initially ordered and make it work. They also placed a quick second order for the additional parts they needed.

Although they love the modular design of shelves and the option for consult calls, there were times when they wished they could simply dial a number and speak to someone on the other line – something we’re currently working on improving!

All and all deJong Studio was pleased with their shelves and found that they served their purpose nicely. In the future they hope that Modern Shelving will add shelving end caps to their offerings because they found that the corners of the shelves are sharp. Although they haven’t purchased yet, deJong has signed up for our Trade Program and plans to start selling shelves to their clients soon.

“Making the most of our space means everything when it comes to staying organized,” says deJong. “Modern Shelving has been the perfect solution for us because this gives us shelves that are not only well designed but also capable of carrying a heavy load.”
