The owner and lead installer at Tony Craftsman Corp., Tony Craftsman is well versed in the art of installation. He’s been in the home improvement and installation field for over five years and caters to the New York area.
Craftsman connected with Modern Shelving when a client ordered a Modern Shelving system and asked him to install it. Since, he's worked on a handful of Modern Shelving residential projects in New York. Here, Craftsman shares more about his business, the different projects he’s worked on with Modern Shelving, and how Modern Shelving’s shelving systems compare to others he’s seen through his line of work.

What different services does Tony Craftsman offer?
Tony Craftsman offers a wide range of handyman and installation services — TV mounting, art and gallery-wall installations, furniture assembly, light electrical work, and wall repair. My specialty is clean, precise wall installations, especially for art, mirrors, and shelving.
Where are you based out of and what areas do you cater to?
I’m based in Brooklyn and work across all five boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — plus parts of Long Island. Most of my clients are in New York City, but I occasionally take projects outside the city too.

How did you first connect with Modern Shelving?
I first came across Modern Shelving when a client ordered your system and asked me to install it. Besides the solid design and easy installation, what really stood out was how bright and stylish it looked — that vivid orange color was amazing. I made a short Instagram video of the project and tagged your brand; that’s how we first connected.
What are some of the projects you’ve worked on with us?
So far, I’ve worked on a few Modern Shelving installations for residential clients in New York. The most recent one was a bright-orange modular system for a home office — it completely transformed the space and became the main visual accent. I handled the full setup, alignment, and wall mounting to make sure everything looked balanced and secure.

You’ve probably seen many different shelving units through your work. How do Modern Shelving shelves compare?
I’ve installed many modular shelving systems from different brands, pretty much everything on the market. What makes Modern Shelving different is the color and design — I’ve never worked with shelves this bright and eye-catching. The installation still requires precision and experience to make everything line up perfectly, but once it’s done, the result looks clean and bold.
How difficult or easy are they to install?
The installation is straightforward if you have the right tools and experience. The parts fit precisely, but what I really like is that the tracks have a bit of flex, which helps in New York City where walls are often uneven because of older buildings. That small detail makes installation easier and gives a cleaner final look.

What has been the reaction from clients that you’ve seen?
Honestly, I don’t remember any big reactions. I’ve installed many similar systems before. But on the last project with the bright-orange shelves, the client and I both stood back at the end and admired how bold the color looked. It really changed the mood of the space — clean, modern, and a bit playful.
What are your thoughts on the shelves?
They’re well-designed and solid. The installation is logical, and the system feels reliable once it’s on the wall. I also like the bright, bold design — it fits New York City perfectly. The colors and clean lines match the creative, modern spaces people live in here.

What has your experience been like working with the Modern Shelving team?
Communication has been easy and professional. Everyone I’ve talked to from the team has been clear and responsive. It’s good to work with people who respect both their product and the installers who represent it.
What’s the benefit of people hiring an installer?
The main benefit is accuracy and safety. A professional knows how to find the studs, level everything perfectly, and make sure the system is secure. In New York, walls are often uneven or made of different materials, so experience really matters. It saves clients time and prevents costly mistakes.
Hiring a trusted handyman ensures your installation is done safely, accurately, and efficiently. Experienced professionals like Tony Craftsman know how to navigate challenges such as uneven walls or complex layouts, guaranteeing a flawless result. With expert help, you can protect your investment and enjoy a beautifully finished Modern Shelving system that's built to last.
