Kevin Shaw knows a thing or two about the entertainment industry. He has worked in television and film for the past 30 years as a documentary director, producer, cinematographer, and editor. He primarily produces human interest stories from regular life or the sport's world. His work has aired national platforms like ESPN and PBS.
When he’s not working, Kevin is a big fan of books and DVDs. He has a large collection of books he’s acquired over the years for work and leisure as well as a DVD collection that includes over 650 different films.
When Kevin outgrew his old shelving system, he hoped online to search for something that looked sleek, minimal, and modern, while being sturdy enough to comfortably house his collections. How did you discover Modern Shelving?
I found Modern Shelving online and started researching them on social media and YouTube. I couldn’t find any negative comments about their product line. I felt Modern Shelving was worth the expense due to the materials they use to create excellent looking shelving.
Did you go with custom shelves or stock shelves?
I went with custom shelves to fill out the space in my home office. I basically have a desk and then two Modern Shelving bookshelves adorning each side. One side holds books I use for my work. The other side holds books I’ve collected over the years which are primarily different sports books, fiction novels, and graphic novels.
I also have some memorabilia items I’ve collected on display on the shelves, like a college football helmet from my alma mater, Michigan State, game used professional footballs, and other items that hold special value.
How did your ordering/design process go working with the team?
I worked with one of your design specialists to make sure the shelves would fit my home office exactly. We had a consultation call, I sent him pictures of my space, and we went through all the options available until I was satisfied with the selection.
Where in your home are your shelves?
The bookshelves are in my home office. I ordered the specialty DVD shelves you offer for my DVD collection. They’re in another space in my home office, an area I’ve designated more for storage.
Are you happy with how your shelves turned out?
The shelving came out great. It was easy to install, and I loved organizing my collection in a meaningful way. Being able to display all my DVDs is a joy. Whenever I want to watch something, I can scan my collection, pick something out and enjoy the film. It’s a true pleasure.
What types of DVDs do you collect?
Oh man that is a loaded question. I love movies, so I collect films from all different genres, contemporary, old-school classics, documentaries, you name it. I have more than 650 DVDs. I used to have them stored in wood shelving units, but I tired of buying new units to store the DVDs. Plus, I could never put them on display.
Is your work part of the reason you’re a big fan of DVDs?
I think I enjoy my DVD collection because I enjoy watching films, whether they be fiction or non-fiction. The films in my collection are entertaining and informative at the same time. I definitely have DVDs from films I worked on. Some of my own films are part of my collection, like the sports film The Street Stops Here, which played on PBS and ESPN, as well as the award-winning social issue docuseries America To Me, which premiered at Sundance and aired on STARZ.
Anything else?
