When you live in a 1200-square-foot apartment in Chicago, Illinois, maximizing your space is critical. When Tim Hartford and his partner were in the process of remodeling their apartment, they were searching for shelving units to house their collection of books and records. Their goal for the shelves: occupy as little space as possible while holding as many books and records as possible.
“We wanted to go pretty vertical,” Hartford says. “Basically, up to the ceiling. But we needed something that was strong enough to hold very heavy book and very heavy records. And lots of them.”
A fan of the modern aesthetic, some Google searching led Hartford to Modern Shelving. He liked the look of the shelves and the option to mix and max custom and stock options. He needed shelves for his living room and office and wanted them to reach to the top of their nine-foot ceilings. After some back and forth with the design team, Hartford placed his order.
“We wanted to maximize every square inch,” says Hartford. “Not a lot of shelves these days go nine feet tall.”
Hartford opted for some custom pieces paired with some standard, stock shelving options to create a set of shelves that would maximize storage space in his small apartment. He ordered two sets of shelves for the living room and one for the home office. When the shelves arrived, Hartford hired an installation team and the shelves were up and running in no time.
Today, his shelves hold his records, mainly rock and jazz, and a collection of art, cooking, and fiction books. The couple is thrilled with the results.
“We’re really excited and really happy we found them,” says Hartford. “We get a lot of compliments.”
