Kathie and Dick Herrick are retired academics with a book collection they have amassed over the past 50 years. They recently downsized and their new home lacked a designated study or any built-in bookshelves. It does, however, have a flex space, which the couple opted to use as a home library / dining room. The only thing it was lacking were shelves.
The Herricks were hoping to find shelves that delivered a built-in look. They also wanted something that was sturdy and secure as they have grandchildren who frequently visit. Finally, they wanted linear feet and an open look.
“Few standard bookcases provided the built-in look we sought, nor did they offer an open, lighter appearance” says Kathie. “Modern Shelving gave us a lot of bang for our buck.”
The Herricks appreciated the availability of sample materials and after working with the design team, they settled on a unit comprised of 31 stock sections. When the shelves arrived, Dick got to work installing them.
Dick found the website instructions helpful. Installing the uprights, loading the brackets and attaching the flat shelves was straightforward, but encountered some trouble when installing the shelves with sides. Ultimately, Dick discovered that their shipment included an extra right-hand bracket and was missing a left.
Dick got on the phone with customer service and a replacement part was rushed to the Herricks. Once they got everything assembled, the Herricks were thrilled with how their shelves turned out.
“Currently, the shelves are filled with books,” says Kathie. “But as we begin to cull our book collection the Modern Shelving system provides a beautiful feature wall to display treasures and art.”
While the Herricks love their shelves as is, they appreciate the ability to reconfigure, add on, or divide up the shelves as their collection continues to evolve and expand.
